Penguin Books have launched a novel from John Dobson called Year of the Gherkin. The rad thing about the campaign is that it co-exists online on Facebook and Twitter and you can click through to these relevant pages and engage with the lead character – Jason Brydon, or the Jasonator (what a creep) as he likes to call himself – as he navigates his way,
poorly through love, life and work.
We hear there will be an app available for download soon, with a sample of excerpts from the book for you to try before you buy. Alternatively you can pick up the entire package online at Loot, Kalahari or Exclusives.
Below is an excerpt from the book. Written diary style like some of our favourites – Adrian Mole and Spud

Subject: YOUR FUTURE
Maybe you can have a look at the below list and let me know why or how you think you have a future at 2Dye4 or anywhere within the group.
Because of this country’s bizarre employment laws which make you harder to unseat than a pope, I am not allowed to tell you to hand in your pristine order book right now. I am also not allowed to check your mail even though it is a company PC and a company server and a company mail address.
However I can look at the recent websites that you have visited and maybe you can tell me how you think these have contributed to doing your job.
I should remind you that, as per your contract, you are meant to be on the road visiting clients, but when you are in the office, you are meant to be processing orders (in your case that would not take long), making cold calls, making sure you are comfortable with our and our competitors’ products, catching up on paperwork and researching new clients.
Here are the last 25 websites you have visited in work hours using company PC and servers:
2. Vodacom sms interface.
4. Career Junction … good idea, by the way. This, I encourage.
5. Gumtree – cars section.
6. Google – Ted Baker shirts online ordering.
8. Enjoyenergy.com – apparently this is a ‘performance related site’.
9. 24hours of freedom.com – ditto.
11. Red Tube!!!!!
13. SuperBru fantasy rugby.
14. Google – Natalie Gulbis images.
15. The Front Row Grunt.co.za.
17. Google – Labour Relations Act.
22. YouTube – Eddie Izzard Darth Vader clip.
23. Google – Will Ferrell latest movie.
24. Fly Mango.
25. Google – Parlotones – gigs 2010.
Please, by return of mail, let me know how any of these have been in the execution of your employment responsibilities. Number 17 intrigues me as we will be consulting that too, I assure you.
Wow – www.analdoos.com – everybody goes onto personal sites in work hours. Like who doesn’t go onto Facebook at work. Some of those sites he has listed are old – I have not been onto Red Tube or The Hun since I met Siobhan. But I have a funny, bad feeling about this. Sales staff were on a final Facebook warning from the beginning of the year and then I had that disciplinary over A1 Auto-gate. Honestly, stuff them, I do not even feel like replying. I just feel like walking out, but how do I pay my car or house or anything? I have the Discovery card coming, and I have R10 000 in a 60-day account that my gran left me that I wasn’t meant to have touched and was originally 50K.
But Siobhan would be more impressed if I resigned rather than was fired. Better phone Slug. Call him, but he says Leigh-Ann (aka Lettuce), his wife and also a lawyer, was much better with this HR kak.
Wow, what a start to the week.
