The web’s 21st. You’re invited

I still have a black haze of distorted, Spiderman, fancy dressed memories from my 21st, but in many ways the web shares a lot of similarities with us. At 21, we’re hormonally charged, and doing just enough on the education front to stay afloat – an apt metaphor considering the abundance of p0rn available on the world wide web.

But this wasn’t how Sir Tim Berners-Lee had originally intended the web to be used. It wasn’t meant for ‘meeting perfect singles’, ‘poking’ or ‘DM’ing prospective hook ups’ – it was to be the catalyst for information sharing. For those of you who take your 10MB line for granted here’s a history lesson:

The web’s story began in 1989 at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva when Sir Tim posted a prophetic summary of the project on the alt.hypertext newsgroup, saying “The WWW project aims to allow all links to be made to any information anywhere.” When it went live on 6 August, 1991 he said, “We are very interested in spreading the web to other areas and having gateway servers for other data. Collaborators welcome.” And collaborate they did. According to, today there are more than 2.3-billion Internet users around the world.

This is a significant date not only for the web but for local start-up, *Moneysmart, too. Like the web, it is making its debut as a publicly available service today (Moneysmart essentially helps you stay in control of your finances, better). But instead of celebrating its own launch, Moneysmart is inviting South Africans to pay tribute to the Great Web and its founder.

Post a birthday tribute to the web and Sir Tim on Facebook here or via Twitter using the hashtag #web21 and you could be R10K wealthier. The best messages will be used as part of a personalised video birthday card and sent to Sir Tim at 16h00pm today.

*If it wasn’t for the www there wouldn’t be sponsorship opportunities from the likes of Moneysmart out there, supporting this virtual soap box, enabling me to share my random musings with you, and I wouldn’t be able to make a living following my passion at Retroviral.

What do you love about the webz? I’m looking for some originality here folks. Don’t be that guy and just hit me with ‘p0rn’.
